37 Accompanying their song, birds engage in elaborate stereotypic movements of great diversity and breadth. The orientation of these movements represents communication, as do their songs. The themes conveyed have meaning and are embedded in the generative processes of adaptive cephalic systems. Understanding song puts us at the heart of our evolution and of nature. Our natural inclination toward music is phylogenetically ancient. We are attracted to birdsong in part due to self-involvement. 38 In both cases music is an extension of our communicative abilities, although whether this is really “bird-song” distinct from “bird-speak” is hard to know.

While birdsong does not approach the complexity of Beethoven’s works, the range and expression of birdsong is quite diverse and interesting. Predominant features include courtship, combined song and movement displays, frustration, aggression, the search for food, avoidance of predators, and reproduction. Like birds, perhaps our own joy in singing emerged as something tied to motivational systems. 39 The means to attract and call attention, to ward off attack, to accommodate in song, now becomes something that has its own life.

50 Song in birds resembles speech in some ways, coupled as it is to syntax and local dialects. Social interaction is a common correlate of both birdsong and speech. Songbirds such as Zebra Finches sing during springtime, when the high-vocal-center (HVC) nucleus enlarges with elevating testosterone concentrations. 53 Song production induced by testosterone depends on protein synthesis in addition to social context. 54 Testosterone, and the metabolic conversion process that transforms it to estradiol, induces synaptogenesis for song production in which neurogenesis and neurotrophic factors are importantly linked to season and song.
