And Elizabeth was far beyond indignant. "With any luck at all…possibly…" "Jonathon! That's quite enough. " She moved toward him in as menacing a manner as she could muster. Not a difficult task as, at this particular moment, strangling him with her bare hands was indeed tempting. She would, in truth, never do such a thing. Probably. " Jonathon shook his head disapprovingly. " Elizabeth brushed aside the lie and peeled off her gloves. The opinion of her father, Thomas Effington, the Duke of Roxborough, was always of importance to her regardless of her age or situation in life.

Besides, there was nothing he could do about it now. He stared unseeing at the row of books in front of him. Nick had spent the last ten years putting Elizabeth firmly and thoroughly out of his mind and out of his heart. And he had succeeded as admirably in this as he had in everything else. While he had not loved another woman, he had certainly not been celibate, and he'd even toyed with the idea of marriage when the occasion, and the lady in question, had warranted it. The fact that he had never taken that drastic step had had nothing to do with Elizabeth.

About him, and worse, about herself? Obviously her feelings for him were no deeper than his were for her. How could they be otherwise, now that he had revealed his questionable character? He was right, of course. What simmered between them was nothing more than desire. Lust. She had never tasted it before and therefore had no defense against it. Nicholas was mysterious and handsome, and only a woman long dead and deeply buried would fail to succumb to his charms. And his kiss. No doubt nothing more than the result of his travels through the world and the guidance of his uncle, a delightful gentleman but one any respectable woman would be wise to stay far away from.
