Sea otters eat urchins, abalone, and other animals that eat kelp. Without the otter predation, the kelp beds, which shelter numerous schools of young fish, would quickly be gone. , it comes as no surprise that there are a few fish around. The species tally is about 300, really an astounding variety. That said, most people who come to Alaska are interested in only salmon and halibut. But first, a fun fact: as of the last time anybody bothered to run the numbers – around 1997 – the average out-of-state fisherman spent $930 to catch a king salmon in Alaska.
They spend most of that time at sea, primarily in the Bering Sea or the Gulf of Alaska. A full-grown chum will weigh seven-15 pounds. There is a huge commercial fishery for chum in Alaska, primarily through gillnetting or seining; about 11 million fish a year are taken. We’ve already mentioned the steelhead controversy – once a trout, now a salmon. There is another kind of very salmon-like trout, the Dolly Varden. Introduction spots that kings do. Fins are usually tinted with orange, and the male has a hooked snout.
Farms are built in streams, with holding pens for different stages. The concentration of fish in one batch of step ponds means there’s a whole lot of fish waste churning out into the ocean – as much as from a town of 10,000 people. The fish are also packed in so tightly that they can hardly swim. The fish themselves are more susceptible to disease and pollution in this cradle-to-the-table captive cycle. Of course, that means they get antibiotics pumped into their food. Canadian fish farms are allowed to shoot any marine mammals that might come by and see these pens as a free lunch – about 900 seals and sea lions are shot a year.
