It's no surprise that settlers have traditionally congregated along this 100-mile stretch of mountains and valleys. Water is plentiful, temperatures don't reach the extremes found in the Great Basin and canyon country, and the soil is fertile. The state has an abundance of badlands and beautiful lands. Forests, heavily weighted with pinyon juniper trees, cover barely a quarter of the terrain. The Sego Lily, the state's flower, thrives because of its ability to adapt to dry soil. Rivers, like the Green and Colorado, cut deep canyons that weren't considered navigable until charted in 1869 by explorer/Renaissance man John Wesley Powell.

Special Concerns The places covered in this book are here for all to enjoy and special care should always be taken to insure their continued existence. Some remote stretches are designated wilderness areas with seriously enforced rules of etiquette, including access limited to those on foot or with pack animals only. Throughout Utah fishing and hunting are subject to state or tribal law. Certain areas have restrictions on camp fires, and even where Page 20 fires are allowed, dry weather may lead to prohibitions on open fires.

And, even if you are accustomed to the outdoors, there's no place else where you can find so many diverse geological, historical, cultural, and just plain drop-dead beautiful features. It's a vast canvas on which to paint your own adventure. In today's rural Utah, the pickup truck is the vehicle of choice for ranchers. Horses continue to serve cowboys who really do wear pointy-toed boots, broad-brimmed hats or, increasingly, baseball caps advertising farm equipment. Dusty jeans and shirts with pearl snaps identify the cowboy style, a pervasive presence here.
