T h e bu st is by M a rce l G u y sk i. 1898 38 in Polish works it has been covered only fragmentarily. In this chapter, an attempt is made to reveal the Romanticism-inspired panorama dealing with art and the artistic life of the city. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the mentality of the Polish intelligentsia was shaped by the then popular positivist writers Eliza Orzeszkowa, Henryk Sienkiewicz and Bolesiaw Prus. Their novels and short stories, related to every day life in Lithuania or historical themes, were the most popular reading, and almost obligatory for every student.
