Preceding this is the understanding of the simple syllogism, which in turn begins with the theory of the simple sentences which compose the syllogism, which in turn begins with the comprehension of all the types of simple vocal sounds [φωναί] out of which the simple sentence has its origin. Therefore, once Aristotle has given his course on simple vocal sounds in his book of the Categories, in this book he sets himself the task [προτίθεται] of giving us the simple sentences which are completed out of the interweaving of the simple vocal sounds and which, since they are proposed by those who want to perform some syllogistic reasoning to their partners in reasoning, are called ‘propositions’ [προτάσεις].
