The DESERT offers the warmest environment during the winter months, although cold winds sometimes force birds to find shelter in protected side-canyons. Most abundant of the wintering birds in the lowlands are the Dark-eyed (Oregon) Juncos and White-crowned Sparrows. Large flocks of these ground-feeders are not uncommon along the washes and on the flats. Other wintering species to be expected in the desert include the Gambel's Quail, Greater Roadrunner, Say's Phoebe, Rock and Bewick's Wrens, Loggerhead Shrike, Spotted Towhee, Western Meadowlark, and House Finch.
